About MLS Data Syndication, Recruiting Tools & Compass's MLS Position

The Conflict Behind the Request

In mid-2024 and 2025, major national brokerages including Compass formally asked multiple listing services (MLSs) across the country to restrict or block MLS data feeds granted to third-party tech vendors whose primary business is agent recruiting. Platforms like Relitix, Brokerkit, and Model Match ingest MLS transaction feeds to rank producing agents, quantify production velocity, and generate automated targeting lists for competing brokerages.

Governance & RESO Standards

Under traditional MLS rules and NAR participant standards, MLS listing data is compiled for cooperative marketing, valuation, and consumer listing syndication (IDX/VOW). The controversy revolves around whether MLS participant licenses permit non-broker third-party vendors to repurpose cooperative transaction histories into commercial recruitment intelligence without the originating broker's explicit consent.
