Unified Rules 10-8 Threshold: The 3 D's

Under revised ABC rules, a judge MUST strongly consider a 10-8 round if a fighter shows two of the three D's, and MANDATORY if all three are met:

Damage
Concussive / Cuts
Dominance
Total Control
Duration
> 3:00 of round

ABC Scoring Hierarchy Protocol

  1. Tier 1: Effective Striking/Grappling (Potential to end fight; immediate impact over cumulative volume).
  2. Tier 2: Effective Aggressiveness (Only evaluated if Tier 1 is deemed 100% dead even).
  3. Tier 3: Fighting Area Control (Tertiary; holding someone against fence without damage cannot win round).

Judge 1: Official ABC Unified

Strictly prioritizes damage and immediate fight-ending attempts over passive holding or volume taps.

Judge 2: Heavy-Damage Leaning

Rewards knockdowns and staggers very heavily, triggering 10-8s on single-round near finishes.

Judge 3: Traditional Volume/Control

Values ground positional time and total landed strikes slightly more when striking impact appears close.

Why do MMA decisions often split? Understanding Judge Variance

Under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts (amended by the Association of Boxing Commissions), judging is evaluated sequentially. Striking and grappling damage are weighted first. However, variance occurs because judges view the cage from different vantage points, weigh single concussive blows versus rapid combinations differently, and apply the "3 D's" threshold for 10-8 rounds with varying degrees of conservatism.

How this simulator computes round winners and 10-8 scores

The simulator calculates an **Effective Impact Score** for each fighter in each round. Concussive knockdowns (weight: 14 pts), visibly rocked states (7 pts), and deep submission threats (6 pts) dwarf baseline significant strikes (1 pt each). Control time only provides marginal points (0.015 pts/sec) and is capped unless accompanied by effective ground-and-pound. When the damage margin exceeds 55% with prolonged duration or dominance, the engine automatically flags the 10-8 criteria.
