How Official ABC MMA Judging Works

Under the revised Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) Unified Rules, scoring strictly adheres to a three-tier hierarchy.

1. Effective Striking & Grappling

The top tier. Immediate impact (visible stun, damage, swelling, cuts, heavy impact) takes priority over cumulative strike counts. Heavy strikes that stagger an opponent supersede prolonged inactive top position.

2. Effective Aggressiveness

Only evaluated if both combatants are dead even in effective striking and grappling. Moving forward aggressively without landing effective strikes does not earn points.

3. Fighting Area Control

Determines who is dictating the pace, location, and position of the bout inside the Octagon. Only considered as the final tiebreaker if the first two tiers are identical.

10-8 & 10-7 Rounds

Judges must award a 10-8 round when a fighter exhibits the "Three D's": Damage, Dominance, and Duration. A 10-7 round is reserved for rare rounds where a stoppage was imminent for the duration.
