The Sean Gunn Dual-Performance Paradigm
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Rocket Raccoon pioneered a multi-tier character architecture: Sean Gunn performed the physical on-set reference in an athletic low crouch to provide tactile eyelines and physical acting chemistry for Chris Pratt and Zoe SaldaƱa, Bradley Cooper recorded vocal performance, and Framestore/Weta animators built the CGI digital double.
Why Eyeline Retargeting Matters
When actors look at an on-set human standing at 180cm, their eyes fixate too high for a 95cm raccoon or 110cm creature. Retargeting markers and crouch rigs force co-stars to maintain authentic physical sightlines, preventing gaze drift when the CGI asset is composited.
VFX Multi-Pass Protocol
Feature VFX workflows shoot multiple sequential passes: an Actor Reference Pass for lighting and acting reference, a Clean Plate with actors stepping out, a Macbeth Color Checker & Chrome/Grey Ball pass for lighting HDRI capture, and Witness Cameras to triangulate 3D coordinates.
Production Notes & Studio Reference Guide
This studio generates calibrated 1080x720 VFX plates and cue sheets. Ground scale ticks indicate 20cm increments. The cyan sightline indicates camera projection vector, while orange and yellow indicators establish eyeline deviation between the human reference performer and the target CGI mesh.
