Appalachian Mountain Shelf Geography

Floyd Central High School in Floyd County, Eastern Kentucky, was formed by consolidating Allen Central and South Floyd. Faced with rugged Appalachian terrain, civil engineers executed an extensive cut-and-fill mountain shelf excavation.

The entire diamond perches at ~1,320 feet above sea level. Directly beyond the 8-foot outfield fence (375 ft to dead center), the engineered shelf abruptly ends: a 45-degree slope drops into the heavily forested Appalachian hollow below.

Nathan-Adair Aerodynamic Model

Batted baseball trajectories follow numerical integration of air drag and Magnus lift forces developed by Dr. Alan Nathan (UIUC) and Dr. Robert Adair (Yale):

At Floyd Central's 1,320 ft elevation, barometric pressure drops to 28.55 inHg, reducing air density (ρ) to 0.00222 slug/ft³ (93.4% of sea level). This ~6.6% reduction in aerodynamic drag provides approximately 11 to 14 additional feet of carry on standard home run trajectories.

Ravine Roll & Recovery Physics

At a standard sea-level ballpark, a 374-foot drive lands on warning track dirt or bounces against the padded fence. At Floyd Central, any ball that clears the 8-foot wall enters free-fall over the 45-degree drop-off.

If a home run clears the fence by 20 feet, its effective ground intercept plunges 40 to 60 vertical feet down into the timbered hollow before initial earth contact, necessitating specialized outfield ball-retrieval nets and stairways.
