How NASCAR Playoff Cutline Math Works
The NASCAR Cup Series Playoff elimination rounds (Round of 16, Round of 12, and Round of 8) feature a high-stakes cutline. Winning any race during a round awards an immediate automatic transfer to the next round, regardless of total points.
The remaining transfer spots are determined strictly by total points accumulated over the three races in the round. Points include:
- Stage Points: Top 10 drivers in Stage 1 and Stage 2 earn 10 down to 1 point.
- Finish Points: The winner receives 40 points, 2nd receives 35, 3rd receives 34, down to 36th–40th receiving 1 point.
- Tiebreakers: Equal total points are broken by best individual race finish within the round.
