How NBA Game Analysts Break Down Film
- Identify the Initial Alignment: Whether 5-out, Horns (two screeners at the elbows), or 1-4 high, the starting structure dictates floor balance.
- Pinpoint the Trigger: Watch the exact frame the ball handler initiates the screen. The defensive reaction (drop vs switch) determines the read.

Drop Coverage Mechanics
The screener's defender drops below the level of the screen to protect the paint and deter uncontested layups, conceding the pull-up mid-range jumper.
Switch Everything
Defenders swap assignments on ball screens. Takes away quick pull-up threes, but exposes bigs on quick perimeter guards and guards posted by rim runners.
Blitz / Trap Strategy
Both defenders jump the ball handler across the screen to force a turnover or desperation pass, leaving 3 offensive players against 2 rotating defenders.
Ice / Sideline Force
The on-ball defender forces the ball handler toward the sideline away from the middle of the court, refusing the screen altogether.
