How the NBA Verticality Rule & And-1 Contact Engine Works
According to official NBA Rule 12B Section I, a defender is entitled to vertical air space within their own imaginary cylinder. To maintain legal verticality, the defender must establish position before the offensive player initiates upward shooting motion, jump strictly vertically without leaning into the shooter, and keep arms extended straight up (no downward hacking).
In our simulator, when Giannis or any downhill rim attacker initiates gather steps, we calculate Kinetic Impulse ($J = \int F \, dt$) upon impact with the help defender. If the defender's lateral velocity vector points toward the driver or their arm angle tilts forward past 90 degrees during the upward gather, a Defensive Blocking Foul is triggered. If the attacker retains enough core stability to release the basketball within rim trajectory bounds, an AND-1 (Count the Bucket + 1 Free Throw) is awarded.
Why Giannis Antetokounmpo's Euro-Gather Absorbs Contact Differently
Giannis possesses an elite combination of a 7'3" wingspan, exceptional center-of-mass control, and long-stride decelerative mechanics. By planting his first gather step wide outside the defender's frame and snapping his secondary plant back across the key, he creates an asymmetrical torque collision. Even with over 1,200 Newtons of lateral body contact, his shoulder acts as a fulcrum to absorb the blow while maintaining extension on his shooting wrist above the rim level.
