CBS 4:25 PM National Game of the Week Mechanics
When CBS holds the national doubleheader window (4:25 PM ET), it commands the highest television ratings in all of sports media. In this week's slate featuring Denver Broncos at San Francisco 49ers, Jim Nantz and Tony Romo anchor the #1 broadcast team.
Under NFL broadcast policy, the home markets of both participating clubs (Denver, Colorado Springs, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento) must remain locked to their local franchise regardless of score. However, out-of-market CBS affiliates have strict "game of high leverage" and "blowout" protocol allowances.
How does the NFL Out-of-Market Blowout Rule work?
If a national game enters the 4th quarter with an 18-point or greater differential, and a secondary regional game (e.g. Chiefs at Chargers) enters the 2-minute drill within one possession, CBS Network Operations Center (NOC) in New York can authorize an emergency live cut-in or permanent switch for all non-primary home DMAs.
