When an NFL team releases a player under contract, the transaction sets off strict Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) accounting mechanisms. The difference between pre-June 1 and post-June 1 cuts, guaranteed base salaries, offset language, and waiver eligibility dictates how front offices structure roster moves.

1. Sunk Proration & Acceleration

Signing bonuses are paid upfront in cash but spread evenly over the contract life for cap purposes (up to 5 years). Upon release, all remaining unamortized prorated money accelerates onto the current year's cap (Pre-June 1) or splits across two years (Post-June 1).

2. The Vested Veteran Rule

Players with 4 or more accrued NFL seasons are classified as "Vested Veterans." Before the NFL trade deadline, released vested veterans do not go through the waiver wire; their contract is terminated and they immediately become unrestricted free agents free to sign anywhere.

3. Post-June 1 Relief Delay

Teams may designate up to two releases as "Post-June 1" prior to June 1. However, the cap relief is not credited until June 2, meaning the releasing club must maintain the full scheduled cap hit on their books throughout the initial free agency wave and NFL Draft.
