The Mathematics of Houston’s Historic 2022 Combined No-Hitter
On November 2, 2022 (Game 4 of the 2022 World Series), Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero, and Ryan Pressly combined to pitch only the second no-hitter in World Series history (the first since Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956).
How the probability engine operates: Across a full 9-inning Major League game, surviving 27 outs without allowing a base hit has an ex-ante baseline probability of approximately 0.12% (1 in 830 games). As outs accumulate and hit suppression continues, the survival probability climbs non-linearly: 18 outs with zero hits yields ~15–25% survival (factoring in the "Third Time Through the Order" penalty), 24 outs yields ~55–65%, and 26 outs with 2 outs in the 9th reaches ~88–92% survival probability.
In this lab, each pitch evaluates true-to-life whiff percentages, chase frequencies, and exit velocity/launch angle distributions (xBA) modeled after Javier’s deceptive rising fastball ("invisible heater") and Abreu’s wipeout slider.
