How the ABC Unified MMA Scoring Rules Determine 10-9, 10-8, and 10-7 Rounds

Under the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts:

  • 10–9 Round: The winner landed more impactful strikes or threatened finishes via submission/ground damage, clearly winning the majority of the round.
  • 10–8 Round: A fighter wins by a large margin with heavy damage, near-finishes, and prolonged dominant position where the opponent offered negligible offense.
  • 10–7 Round: Total accumulation of catastrophic damage where the referee could have feasibly stopped the contest.
  • Impact Over Volume: A single wobbling head kick or knockdown carries higher weight than 15 probing jabs that land cleanly but cause zero damage.
How Takedowns and Control Time Are Evaluated

Takedowns are not scored purely as points for the act of taking an opponent to the canvas. A takedown is only rewarded when the offensive fighter uses it to mount an attack, land heavy ground-and-pound, or execute submission attempts. Stalling against the cage or holding guard without advancing position is secondary to any standing strike damage dealt earlier in the frame.
