How Clinching Scenarios & Magic Numbers Work

The Official Magic Number Formula

The standard MLB formula to determine the leader's Magic Number against a trailing competitor is:

M# = Games in Season (162) + 1 − Leader Wins − Trailer Losses

Any victory by the first-place team drops the magic number by 1. Any defeat by the second-place team drops it by 1. If both happen on the same day, the number drops by 2.

In the official MLB dispatch:

  • Atlanta clinches NL East if: They beat Houston (2:10pm ET), OR Philadelphia loses to NY Mets (1:10pm ET).
  • Because Atlanta's Magic Number is 1, either an Atlanta win OR a Philadelphia loss secures the crown today.
  • Out of the 4 combined slate permutations, 3 seal the pennant today, while only 1 (Braves lose + Phillies win) keeps the race open for tomorrow.
