How MLB Magic Numbers Work
The standard formula to determine the leader's Magic Number (E#) against any chasing rival is:
Magic Number = (162 + 1) - (Leader Wins) - (Opponent Losses)
Every win by the leading club or loss by the contender decreases the number by 1. When the number reaches 0, the title is mathematically clinched.
MLB Tiebreaker Rules (Post-2022)
Major League Baseball eliminated Game 163 one-game playoffs. Ties are broken in order by:
1. Head-to-head record in the regular season series.
2. Higher intradivision winning percentage.
If the leader owns the head-to-head tiebreaker, their effective magic number drops by 1 because a tie at 162 games guarantees them the title!
