Why is there no Game 163 tiebreaker game anymore?

Beginning in 2022 with the expanded 12-team postseason format, Major League Baseball officially eliminated the sudden-death Game 163 play-in game. To prevent scheduling congestion before the Wild Card Series, all ties for division titles and postseason seeds are broken strictly through formulaic mathematical tiebreakers.

The primary criterion is always Head-to-Head regular season record. In the 2023 season, for instance, Houston and Texas both finished with 90-72 records, but Houston was awarded the AL West Division crown because they won the regular season series 9-4.

How does a 3-way tie get resolved if the Mariners catch up?

If three teams finish with identical records:

1. Composite Head-to-Head winning percentage: Combined record of each club against the other two clubs. If one club holds a winning record over both others, it earns the division championship.

2. If two clubs are tied for the best composite winning percentage, the two-team tiebreaker rules break that tie.

3. If all three clubs have identical composite percentages, intradivision record is evaluated.

Magic Number Calculation formula

The traditional Magic Number formula is: Magic Number = (Games in season + 1) - (Leader Wins + Second-Place Losses).

However, when a team holds the mathematical tiebreaker in hand, the "+1" drops off, because matching records guarantees the championship. Thus, holding the tiebreaker effectively acts as an extra half-game to full-game cushion in the standings.
