Why Henry's Law & Alveolar Air Require a Tube

Alcohol in breath obeys Henry's Law, maintaining a temperature-dependent partition ratio of approximately 2100:1 at 34°C (the normal exhaled breath temperature). For every 2,100 mL of alveolar lung air, the mass of ethanol equals that found in 1 mL of pulmonary blood.

However, the first 0.5 to 1.2 liters of an exhale comes from the mouth, pharynx, and trachea—the "anatomical dead space." If a user drank within 15–20 minutes, residual alcohol coating the mouth mucosa will read as high as 0.300%+ BAC if sampled immediately. Professional devices employ a pressure transducer that actively rejects any sample until back-pressure confirms deep alveolar air has arrived.

Smartphone Hardware Constraints & Battery Tradeoffs

Why don't modern smartphones integrate chemical breath sensors?

1. Contamination & Airflow: A breathalyzer requires a direct, saliva-free laminar flow tunnel. Phone speaker and mic ports are protected with hydrophobic acoustic mesh that blocks breath particulates and creates turbulent backwash.

2. Catalyst Degradation: Platinum electrodes and semiconductor MEMS oxides degrade when exposed to pocket lint, skin oils, and ambient volatile organic compounds (perfumes, cooking oils).

3. Space & Cost: Adding a dedicated, heated flow chamber consumes critical volumetric space inside an ultra-slim chassis, reducing battery capacity by 10–15% for a feature used rarely.
