MLB Postseason Structure & Clinching Math
Under MLB's expanded 12-team playoff format, each league features six postseason entrants:
- Seeds 1 & 2: Top two division winners by winning percentage; earn automatic byes to Division Series.
- Seed 3: Remaining division winner; hosts best-of-three Wild Card Series against Seed 6.
- Seeds 4 & 5: Top two non-division champions; Seed 4 hosts Seed 5 in best-of-three Wild Card Series.
- Seed 6: Final Wild Card qualifier; travels to play Seed 3.
Magic Number Formula: MN = (162 - Leader Wins - Trailer Losses) + 1. When the magic number hits zero, the playoff berth or division title is mathematically locked.
Tiebreaker Hierarchy (No Game 163)
Under current collective bargaining rules, one-game tiebreaker playoffs are eliminated. Deadlocks are broken strictly via statistical tiebreakers:
- Step 1: Head-to-head regular season record between tied clubs.
- Step 2: Intradivision record (better win percentage against teams within the same division).
- Step 3: Interdivision record (better win percentage against teams in the same league outside their division).
- Step 4: Second-half intraleague record.
This simulator factors in head-to-head season series when sorting identical win-loss records.
