How WNBA Postseason Qualification Works
Understanding tiebreakers, magic numbers, and the 1-through-8 non-conference playoff format.
1. Universal 1 Through 8 Seeding
Unlike the traditional Eastern/Western NBA model, the WNBA seeds the top eight teams across the entire league into the bracket regardless of conference affiliation. The #1 seed plays #8, #2 plays #7, and so forth in a best-of-three first round.
2. Head-to-Head & Tiebreaker Hierarchy
When teams finish with identical win-loss records, ties are broken first by regular season head-to-head records. If tied, the second tiebreaker is win percentage against teams finishing .500 or better, followed by cumulative point differential.
3. Calculating The Magic Number
A team's magic number to clinch a playoff berth or exact seed is calculated as: (Remaining Games + 1) - (Team Wins - Chaser Losses). Each win by the leading team or loss by the closest competitor reduces this number by one until zero (clinched).
