The NFL Passer Rating Formula Explained
Adopted in 1973, the official NFL passer rating evaluates four key passing performance categories per attempt, capping each calculation between 0.0 and 2.375:
- Completion Percentage:
a = max(0, min(2.375, ((Comp/Att) - 0.3) * 5)) - Yards per Attempt:
b = max(0, min(2.375, ((Yds/Att) - 3.0) * 0.25)) - Touchdown Percentage:
c = max(0, min(2.375, (TD/Att) * 20)) - Interception Percentage:
d = max(0, min(2.375, 2.375 - ((INT/Att) * 25))) - Final Rating:
((a + b + c + d) / 6) * 100(Max perfect rating: 158.3)
