Why Jordan Poyer says "#17 Josh Allen makes Buffalo hardest to defend"
Former All-Pro safety Jordan Poyer anchored Buffalo’s secondary alongside Micah Hyde for years before facing them in the AFC East. When Poyer noted "When you have 17 at the helm, it's hard to argue against that," he was speaking from the rare vantage point of a safety whose entire job is manipulating defensive leverage, disguising pre-snap two-high looks into Cover 3 buzz or Cover 1 robber, and calculating break times against arm talent.
Split-Field vs Single-High
Pre-snap two-high safeties (Cover 2, Cover 4 Quarters, Cover 6) take away boundary deep balls and post routes. At the snap, elite QBs identify whether one safety drops into the intermediate hole ("Robber") or rolls to the deep middle third.
Closing Velocity & Arm Strength
Modern NFL safeties break at 18–20 mph on the ball flight. An ordinary pass takes 1.1 seconds to travel 25 yards downfield, allowing safeties to close up to 6 yards. Allen's 65-mph bullet velocity shrinks that window to 0.72 seconds, neutralizing defensive recovery angles.
The Hole Shot & Honey Hole
Against classic Cover 2, the void between the cornerback sinking at 10–12 yards and the deep safety pedaling at 18–22 yards is the "honey hole." A quarterback must loft the ball over the cornerback's head before the safety can reach the sideline numbers.
Playbook Route Concepts & Defensive Coverage Rules
- Smash Concept: Outside receiver runs a 5-yard hitch holding the cornerback in the flat. Inside slot runs a 12-yard corner route directly into the Cover 2 honey hole.
- Mills Concept (Post-Dig): Slot receiver runs a deep dig at 12 yards, dragging the quarters safety down, while the outside X-receiver cuts on an 18-yard deep post over top.
- Dagger Concept: Inside seam receiver sprints 25 yards vertical to clear out the free safety, vacating the middle field for a 14-yard hunt dig route.
- Four Verticals: Stresses single-high safeties (Cover 1 & Cover 3) by attacking both hashes simultaneously, forcing the lone safety to commit to one side.
