How #17 Attacks Safety Coverages in the Modern NFL
As former All-Pro Bills safety Jordan Poyer observed, elite quarterback play begins with pre-snap split-safety identification and post-snap anticipation. When deep safeties drop into halves or quarters, the ball must be layered between the underneath linebackers and over-the-top safety leverage.
Cover 2 Hole Shot
Two deep safeties split each half of the field 20 yards deep. The sweet spot is the "turkey hole" on the boundary sideline (between the cornerback who squats at 6 yards and the deep safety sliding over).
Attacking Cover 1 Single-High
A lone post safety patrols the middle of the field while cornerbacks play lock man-to-man. Corner and post-corner routes create outside leverage away from the single-high safety's closing path.
