IFAB Law 12: Careless, Reckless, or Excessive Force?
- Careless (Direct Free Kick Only): Player shows a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge, or acts without precaution. No disciplinary card needed.
- Reckless (Yellow Card Caution): Player acts with disregard to the danger to, or consequences for, an opponent. Must be cautioned.
- Using Excessive Force (Sending-off / Red Card): Player exceeds the necessary use of force and/or endangers the safety of an opponent. Must be sent off for Serious Foul Play.
- Point of Contact Threshold: Challenges landing on the Achilles tendon, calf, shin, or knee with exposed studs are universally instructed as Serious Foul Play.
DOGSO Criteria (Denial of Obvious Goal Opportunity)
- Distance between the offence and the goal: Closer proximity increases the scoring probability.
- General direction of the play: Moving towards opponent's goal rather than peeling away towards corners.
- Likelihood of keeping or gaining control of ball: Attacker had possession or clean path to settle ball.
- Location and number of defenders: Whether remaining defenders could cover before a shot is taken.
