Official RIAA Certification Milestones

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awards Gold, Platinum, and Diamond honors based on cumulative US market shipments and certified equivalents:

  • Gold: 500,000 certified units
  • Platinum: 1,000,000 certified units
  • Multi-Platinum: 2,000,000+ units (in increments of 1M: 2×, 3×, 4×, etc.)
  • Diamond: 10,000,000+ certified units (super-tier)
Historical Note: On February 1, 2016, the RIAA integrated on-demand audio and video streaming into its historic Gold & Platinum awards program at a 150:1 single conversion ratio.

Calculation Standards & Formulas

Digital Single Equivalent Formula (Default)

Total Units = Pure Downloads + (Audio Streams / 150) + (Video Streams / 150)

Official on-demand audio streams (Spotify Premium/Free, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal) and video streams (YouTube official videos, Vevo) count on parity for single track recognition.

Album Equivalent Units (TEA & SEA)

For album certifications, 10 track downloads = 1 Track Equivalent Album (TEA). For streaming (SEA), 1,250 subscription streams or 3,750 ad-supported/video streams equal 1 album unit.

Is Certification Automatic?

No. Record labels or artist management must formally request an independent audit conducted by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman to inspect sales reports and streaming logs before plaques are certified.

Stored conversion modes and threshold arithmetic

Read the explanation

The saved stream-unit calculator single mode divides both entered audio and entered video by one hundred fifty. For hypothetical one hundred fifty thousand of either, contribution is one thousand equivalent units. Equal bars use point three pixels per unit. This describes actual source arithmetic only. It is not a claim these conversions are current official certification rules, nor proof streams are eligible, audited or from any particular artist. The page does not query a certification authority. Switching to the saved album branch changes audio divisor to twelve hundred fifty and video to thirty-seven hundred fifty. For the same hypothetical one hundred fifty thousand, audio contributes one hundred twenty and video forty. Bars compare at four pixels per unit. Pure sales add directly in both modes; no rounding floor is applied to these stream contributions. These are authored rules preserved from code, not verified current standards or independently validated albums and sales. After adding sales and stream contributions, thresholds determine label and next target. Hypothetical six hundred thousand units crosses stored five hundred thousand gold threshold but not one million; remaining gap is four hundred thousand. Bars compare total and target at point zero zero zero five pixels per unit. Crossing a calculator threshold does not grant an award or establish actual audited sales. Native gold preset, complete stable JSON export and reset preserve original inputs, plaque drawing and responsive dimensions. Artist facts, eligibility and certification validity remain unverified.
