T20 Franchise Trade Rules & Purse Mechanics

How do player trading windows work in cricket leagues?

During the official pre-auction trading window, franchises can swap players through mutual consent or acquire players in an all-cash deal. The acquiring team must assume the traded player's exact contracted auction salary, which modifies their remaining purse going into the mini or mega auction.

What happens when player salaries don't match?

If Franchise A trades a ₹15 Crore player for a ₹13.5 Crore player from Franchise B, Franchise A gains ₹1.5 Crore in purse room, while Franchise B loses ₹1.5 Crore from its available auction purse. Cash top-ups can also be agreed outside the purse cap with league consent.

What are the strict squad composition limits?

In standard IPL regulations, teams must maintain between 18 and 25 players in their total squad, with a maximum of 8 overseas (non-Indian) players. A trade that pushes a team beyond 8 overseas players or drops their total squad below 18 is prohibited.

Is this model applicable to other franchise sports?

Yes. Any league with hard salary caps and player contracts (such as the BBL, SA20, The Hundred, or salary-cap leagues like the NBA and MLS) operates on comparable salary-matching and roster slot constraints.
