How to get your clip onto your iPhone

Apple does not let a website install a ringtone directly, but the last step takes about a minute with the free GarageBand app that is already made by Apple.

  1. Trim and download your clip

Use the trimmer above to pick your favorite 30 seconds and tap Download. On iPhone, the clip saves to the Files app.

  2. Open GarageBand on your iPhone

It is free on the App Store and made by Apple. Create a new song, tap the loop icon in the top right, then Files, and pick your downloaded clip.

  3. Drag the clip onto a track

Touch and hold the clip in the browser list, then drag it onto the empty track area.

  4. Share as a ringtone

Tap the down arrow, choose My Songs, long-press your new project, tap Share, then Ringtone, name it, and tap Export.

  5. Set it in Settings

Go to Settings, then Sounds and Haptics, then Ringtone. Your custom tone appears at the top of the list. Tap it and you are done.

Common questions

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The whole process runs inside your browser using the Web Audio API. The file never leaves your device, which also makes it fast.

Why is the ringtone limited to 30 seconds?

iOS enforces a maximum ringtone length of 30 seconds. The trimmer warns you and caps the export so GarageBand accepts it without complaints.

What if my video format will not load?

Browsers can decode most MP4, MOV, MP3, M4A, and WAV files. If a file fails, try playing it once in your Photos or Files app, or use a screen recording of the song, then load that recording here.

Do I need iTunes or a computer?

No. The download plus GarageBand method works entirely on the phone. A computer with Finder or iTunes also works if you prefer.
