Why Heat-Crisped Leaves Must Not Be Stripped
A natural impulse when a plant turns brown in 38°C heat is to immediately prune all dead-looking branches. In horticultural physiology, this is often a fatal error:
- Thermal Shielding: Dead, desiccated outer foliage acts as natural sun-armor, shading fragile interior bark and latent dormition nodes from lethal UV burning.
- Energy Depletion: Aggressive post-heat pruning stimulates premature vegetative flushes before the damaged root xylem has rebuilt capillary water pressure.
- The Cambium Scratch Rule: Only prune branches whose sub-bark cambium reveals dry, brittle, cinnamon-brown wood. If a gentle thumbnail scratch shows moist bright green, leave it entirely alone.
Optimal 8-Week Heat Rebound Sequence
Nurse the specimen systematically based on physiological milestones:
- Weeks 1–2 (Hydraulic Stabilization): Erect 50% shade netting immediately. Apply a deep dawn soak. Spread 6–8 cm coarse mulch 5 cm away from the trunk. Zero synthetic fertilizer.
- Weeks 3–4 (Root Regeneration): Drench with cold-pressed kelp (providing natural auxins/cytokinins). Watch for swelling reddish or green dormant nodes along primary stems.
- Weeks 5–8 (Epicormic Awakening): Once secondary leaf nodes push out and expand, selectively snip only genuinely hollow tips. Gradually harden off shade cloth.
