Scoring Sacrifice & Efficiency Lab
Simulate how elite volume scorers adapt their shot selection, ball dominance, and offensive load to transition franchise culture from rebuilding struggles into championship contention.
Offensive Efficiency & Gravity Map
Spatial shot frequency, true shooting yield & team net ratingUnderstanding the "Scoring Sacrifice" Curve
In basketball analytics, the relationship between scoring volume and efficiency is governed by the Usage-Efficiency Frontier. As an individual's usage rate climbs, efficiency naturally degrades because defenses load up, help-side defenders cheat, and the player is forced to take increasingly contested shots.
During Kelsey Mitchell's early years in Indiana, she consistently posted stellar 18+ PPG scoring averages while carrying enormous offensive burdens on young, developing rosters. When elite playmaking talent and complementary scorers arrive, championship contention demands a specific sacrifice: trading self-created pull-up midrangers for ruthless off-ball movement, relocation catch-and-shoot threes, and transition rim attacks.
Analytical Methodologies
True Shooting Percentage (TS%) Formulation
Calculated as TS% = PTS / (2 * (FGA + 0.44 * FTA)). The model updates true shooting dynamically based on the expected points per shot (ePPS) of catch-and-shoot 3PTs (~1.15 PPP), restricted area finishes (~1.24 PPP), and unassisted mid-range isolations (~0.84 PPP).
Offensive Load & Gravitational Rating
Offensive load integrates USG%, direct creation, and off-ball gravity. Giving up isolation touches in favor of off-ball motion stretches help defenders, unlocking cutting lanes for frontcourt players while elevating overall team Offensive Rating (ORTG).
Pythagorean Win Expectancy
Estimated team wins are projected over a standard 40-game regular season using Pythagorean expectation derived from calculated Team ORTG vs. baseline DRTG, adjusted by the player's defensive engagement boost from the sacrifice slider.
