The Spot-Starter Quarterback Mindset
When a veteran spot-starter gets called up cold in December after 1,000 days on the bench, there is no time to shake off rust. Two-minute drill quarterbacking requires ruthless coverage recognition:
- Cover 2 Man: Two deep safeties split wide. Exploited via middle-of-the-field seams, crossers, and deep digs behind linebackers.
- Cover 3 Sky: Single high safety, three deep third defenders. Soft flat routes and sideline comeback/out routes stop the clock.
- Zero Blitz: No safety help over top. Hot read to the running back in the flat or the slot receiver on quick slants before the blitz reaches.
- Clock Management: Completions outside the hash marks allow receivers to step out of bounds, stopping the clock without burning timeouts.
