Orbital Station Handover & Crew Rotation Mechanics

1. Change of Command Ceremony

When an expedition ends, the outgoing Commander formally rings the station ship's bell and passes symbolic custody of the station keys to the incoming Commander. Outgoing Commander Jessica Meir (NASA Crew-12) transfers flight responsibility and emergency command authority to cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov (Roscosmos Soyuz), signifying the seamless continuity of space operations.

2. Direct Handover Surge Dynamics

During a "direct handover", the relief crew arrives prior to the departure of the incumbent crew, avoiding uncrewed station operations. This creates a 5 to 11-day surge where complement swells up to 11 astronauts. This tests environmental controls: carbon dioxide removal assemblies (CDRA), water recovery systems (WRS), and oxygen generators (OGS) operate at peak cyclic capacity.

3. Port Architecture & Emergency Escape

International Docking Adapters (IDA-2 on Node 2 Forward and IDA-3 on Node 2 Zenith) host US Commercial Crew vehicles (SpaceX Crew Dragon and Boeing Starliner). Russian segment ports (Prichal Nadir, Poisk Zenith, Rassvet) host Soyuz and Progress. Every onboard crewmember must always have an assigned, pressurized emergency descent vehicle in case of depressurization or fire.
