The Front-Heavy VR Problem

Legacy standalone headsets (500g+) mount compute, battery, and cooling directly in front of the eyes. This creates a moment arm of over 120mm from the cervical pivot, generating upwards of 2.4 N·m of cantilevered neck torque. Even brief 45-minute sessions result in facial pressure and sternocleidomastoid fatigue.

The Steam Frame Hybrid Solution

By shifting high-energy battery cells to the occipital rear strap, offloading heavy 3D rendering via Wi-Fi 6E/7 or DP Alt-mode to local PC hardware, and using pancake micro-OLEDs, total visor mass drops under 220g. The resulting center-of-mass lands within 12.4mm of the neutral pivot axis.
