The Aerodynamics of NASCAR Oval Battles

In modern stock car oval competition (such as Hendrick Motorsports' Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 driven by Kyle Larson), aerodynamics and track geometry govern every passing opportunity. When trailing a lead chariot by less than two car lengths, the trailing car experiences up to a 28% reduction in frontal aerodynamic drag, allowing it to close the gap at higher velocity.

Banking angles between 24° and 31° convert forward momentum into vertical downforce, pressing the right-side tires into the asphalt with up to 3G of lateral loading. The high cushion line grants higher apex exit speeds, while the low line minimizes traveled distance.

How to execute a Slingshot Pass

Tuck your car directly behind Leader #5 on the high cushion or middle line to build drafting momentum. When your speed climbs above 188 mph and the draft reduction exceeds 20%, steer down to the low line to break out of the slipstream and carry your velocity past the leader into Turn 3.

Managing Right-Front (RF) Tire Temperature

Running the tight low line generates peak lateral scrubbing friction. If RF temperature exceeds 245°F, grip levels decline dramatically. Run the higher banking or pit for fresh Goodyears to restore baseline handling.
