1. What is a Spangram?
The Spangram is the master word that describes the puzzle's overarching theme. Unlike regular theme words (which highlight in cyan/blue upon discovery), the Spangram turns yellow and must touch two opposing edges of the board (top to bottom, or left to right). Because the Spangram divides the 6×8 board into distinct clusters, finding it early is often the single most effective solving tactic.
2. Adjacency & Non-Overlapping Paths
Words are formed by tracing contiguous paths: each letter can connect horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to an adjacent untouched tile. Once a valid theme word or Spangram is locked, its tiles cannot be reused by any other word. Every single one of the 48 letters in the 6×8 grid belongs to exactly one theme word or the Spangram.
3. Hint Economics & Unused Letters
In the official game, finding three non-theme dictionary words (minimum 4 letters each) fills your hint meter to spotlight letters of a hidden theme word. In this interactive workbench, our progressive hint engine breaks down clues layer by layer—from conceptual nudges to starting coordinates—so you can practice spotting path orientations without spoiling the joy of discovery.
Can letters be connected diagonally in Strands?
Yes. Any adjacent tile in the 8 cardinal and intercardinal directions (up, down, left, right, and all 4 diagonals) is valid, as long as the tile has not already been claimed by a solved word or reused within the current active stroke.
Does the Spangram have to be a single word?
Not always. The Spangram can consist of two or more words joined together without spaces (for example, BREAKFASTCLUB or STARGAZING). It will always touch two opposite sides of the grid.
How can I export my solved board or custom puzzle?
