How Mathematical Contention Works in F1

A driver is mathematically in contention if their current points total plus the theoretical maximum points they could earn across all remaining sessions is strictly greater than or equal to the championship leader's current points:

Driver Points + Max Available Points >= Leader Points

If a driver's gap to the championship leader exceeds the total points available from remaining Grands Prix, Sprints, and fastest lap bonuses, they are mathematically eliminated, regardless of race results or DNFs.

  • Grand Prix Victory: 25 points
  • Sprint Race Victory: 8 points
  • Fastest Lap Bonus: 1 point (awarded if finishing in the top 10)

Why Nine Drivers Were in Contention Heading to Baku

Heading into the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, 8 Grands Prix and 3 Sprints remained on the calendar. That offered a maximum of 232 points:

(8 × 25 GP) + (3 × 8 Sprint) + (8 × 1 FL) = 200 + 24 + 8 = 232 Pts

Max Verstappen led with 303 points. Any driver with at least 71 points (303 − 232) remained mathematically alive. Fernando Alonso held 9th place with exactly 50 points (just behind the 71-point threshold), while 9th-place contender Lance Stroll/Sergio Pérez kept the active circle at nine drivers.
