Cartographic Context: Why Map Projections Matter

Devised in 1569 by Gerardus Mercator, the standard Mercator projection preserves rhumb lines (constant compass bearings), making it revolutionary for maritime navigation. However, preserving local angles (conformality) requires stretching distances infinitely toward the poles.

Because Africa straddles the equator, it experiences virtually zero area inflation. On Mercator maps, Greenland (2.17M km²) appears identical in size to Africa (30.37M km²), despite Africa being nearly 14 times larger. The UN resolution establishes that international curricula and administrative presentations should prioritize equal-area projections like Equal Earth or Gall-Peters to prevent pervasive geographical misconceptions.
