Canine Cancer in Golden Retrievers: Early Warning Signs

In memory of Tucker, veterinary oncology recommends regular monthly checks for all senior dogs.

Lymphoma (LSA) ~20% of Golden Cancers

Cancer of the lymphatic system, frequently presenting as non-painful swollen lymph nodes.

  • Firm, enlarged lymph nodes under the jaw, behind knees, or in armpits
  • Unexplained lethargy, loss of appetite, or rapid weight drop
  • Increased thirst and urination (hypercalcemia)

Hemangiosarcoma (HSA) High Breed Risk

Rapidly developing cancer of blood vessel linings, most commonly affecting the spleen and heart.

  • Sudden weakness, collapse, or pale white gums
  • Distended or swollen abdomen ("potbelly" appearance)
  • Transient 'off' episodes where dog suddenly recovers after resting

Mast Cell Tumors (MCT) Common Skin Cancer

Variable skin growths that can fluctuate in size due to localized histamine release.

  • New lumps or bumps that appear red, ulcerated, or itch intensely
  • Lumps that rapidly swell, shrink, and swell again
  • Firm subcutaneous masses anywhere on limbs or torso
