Why Video Handles Exist
A video transition occurs across time. For a 30-frame cross-dissolve centered at the cut, Clip A must continue playing for 15 frames past the cut while Clip B must start playing 15 frames before the cut.
Without invisible head and tail footage ("handles"), the NLE has zero media to dissolve, forcing software to either freeze the last frame or ripple-shift the timeline.
The Ripple Desync Danger
When an editor forces a transition with Ripple Edit mode, the software eats into visible clip footage to forge an overlap. This physically shortens sequence duration.
Notice on the audio waveform how the Beat Drop Hit (Frame 150) slips out of sync with the visual cut by the exact deficit frame count, destroying music timing.
The Safe In/Out Trimming Rule
Always shoot 2–3 seconds of pre-roll before "Action!" and post-roll after "Cut!".
When trimming in your source monitor, set In-points at least 15–30 frames after media start and Out-points 15–30 frames before media end. This ensures 100% smooth, artifact-free transitions.
