Both languages trace back to a shared Proto-Austroasiatic ancestor. However, through different historical areal contacts, Vietnamese developed a Latin orthography expressing phonemic pitch (tonogenesis), while Khmer preserved an Indian-derived abugida expressing phonemic phonation registers (modal vs. breathy voice) which fundamentally alters vowel glyph pronunciation.

When a Vietnamese Speaker Learns Khmer:

  • Scriptio Continua (No Word Spaces): Khmer words run continuously without spaces; spaces represent clause or phrase boundaries rather than lexical tokens.
When a Khmer Speaker Learns Vietnamese:
  • Contrasting 6 Pitch Contours: Standard Khmer is non-tonal. Reproducing Vietnamese ngã (creaky rising with glottal stop) and hỏi (dipping-rising) requires entirely new laryngeal muscle coordination.
  • Unrounded Central Vowel Contrast: Distinguishing ư [ɨ] and ơ [ɤ] from u [u] and o [ɔ] is a recurring obstacle because Khmer vowel inventories categorize along height and diphthong centering rather than unrounded back positions.
  • Complex Latin Diacritic Stacking: Quốc Ngữ requires reading double diacritics simultaneously (e.g., combines the vowel modifier horn with the hook tone; thắng combines the breve with acute tone).
  • Final Checked Glottalization: Syllables ending in -p, -t, -c, -ch must carry only sắc or nặng tones and terminate in unreleased stops [p̚, t̚, k̚].

Historical Divergence: Haudricourt's Tonogenesis vs. Khmer Register Split

In 1954, linguist André-Georges Haudricourt proved that Vietnamese's six tones evolved from Proto-Austroasiatic syllable codas and voicing: final glottal consonants (*-ʔ) spawned rising tones, final fricatives (*-h) spawned falling tones, and the loss of voicing in initial consonants split the system into high and low registers. Meanwhile, Khmer underwent an identical loss of consonant voicing, but instead of morphing into lexical pitch, it morphed into vowel timbre registers (the 1st modal series preserved historical voiceless sounds; the 2nd breathy series preserved voiced sounds).
