WNBA Playoff & Lottery Rules Guide
How Magic Numbers Are Formatted in the Final Week
A team's Playoff Magic Number represents the total combination of wins by that team and losses by the 9th-place team (the highest non-playoff seed) needed to guarantee a postseason berth. Formula:
Magic Number = Games Remaining + 1 + Losses (Chaser) - Losses (Target). Once the number hits 0, the team has mathematically clinched.
How WNBA Draft Lottery Odds Work (2-Year Cumulative Record)
Unlike the NBA which uses single-season records, the WNBA Draft Lottery weights odds based on the combined records of the past two regular seasons for the four teams that miss the playoffs. The team with the worst two-year record receives 442 out of 1,000 chances (44.2%), the second worst receives 276 (27.6%), third receives 178 (17.8%), and fourth receives 104 (10.4%).
WNBA Playoff Seeding & Tiebreakers
The top 8 teams qualify regardless of conference affiliation (unseeded 1 through 8). Ties are resolved by: (1) Head-to-head record, (2) Better record against teams .500 and above, (3) Cumulative point differential in head-to-head games, (4) Overall point differential across all regular-season games.
