Why 104 matches?
- Group stage: 12 groups × 6 matches = 72 matches.
- Knockouts: a single-elimination bracket with 32 teams needs exactly 31 matches to produce a winner (every match eliminates one team; 31 teams must be eliminated), plus the third-place playoff = 32 matches.
- 72 + 32 = 104, up from 64 in 2022.
The new Round of 32
- 2026 is the first World Cup where 8 third-placed teams advance, so a team can lose twice in the group and still reach the knockouts.
