HTTP status 402 Payment Required has been reserved since the 1990s — the web's founders assumed native payments were coming. They never did; ads and subscriptions filled the gap, and 402 sat unused for three decades. x402 finally gives it a job: a standard way for a server to say "this costs $0.001, here's how to pay," and for a client to pay and retry — no account, no card form, no human.
AI agents can't fill out checkout forms or manage 500 subscriptions. But they can hold a wallet. Per-request pricing lets an agent buy exactly one API call or one article, instantly. For publishers, it converts scraping bots — today a pure cost — into paying customers. That's the "agentic web" bet: most future traffic is machines, and machines are excellent at paying tiny tolls.
A stablecoin is a token pegged 1:1 to a currency (usually USD). For micro-payments they solve three problems at once: no volatility (a $0.001 price stays $0.001), sub-cent fees on modern chains, and instant machine-to-machine settlement with no card network, chargebacks, or 30-day payout cycles. The payment proof is just a signed receipt the server can verify.
