The AI Distillation Controversy

Director Michael Kratsios announced that the US has information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's Fable model to develop its K3 model, marking a major escalation in AI intellectual property enforcement.

According to the statement, Moonshot AI developed a sophisticated internal platform to conduct large-scale distillation against US models, allowing them to quickly switch between multiple methods of access to avoid detection.

Moonshot AI has acquired GB300-equipped servers and has accessed GB300s in Thailand, likely to train its AI models — providing hardware evidence supporting the distillation allegations.

The United States strongly supports open AI innovation and legitimate distillation for smaller, efficient models. However, large-scale, covert industrial distillation aimed at stealing proprietary US technology and undermining American research is unacceptable.
