The Baku Turn 1 Dilemma
Arriving at 345 km/h after Baku's 2.2 km full-throttle section, drivers experience ~4.5G deceleration. Turn 1 is a tight 90° left turn flanked by unforgiving TecPro barriers and a narrow escape road.

Aero downforce is proportional to velocity squared (Fdown ∝ v2). At 345 km/h downforce is ~28 kN; at 110 km/h it plummets to ~3 kN. If a driver does not aggressively trail off the brake pedal, the front tyres instantly lock.
Once a front tyre locks for over 0.35 seconds, flat-spotting destroys tyre integrity and turning torque vanishes. Lando Norris opted for the escape road runoff to preserve the car, dropping from P7 to P9 while negotiating the 180° spin-turn.
