The Statcast Physics Behind 40/40

The 40/40 club requires an almost contradictory physiological profile: the pure rotational bat speed to hit balls 105+ mph with high launch angles, paired with the twitch fast acceleration to cover 90 feet in under 3.3 seconds.

Pete Crow-Armstrong ranks in the 99th percentile of MLB sprint speed at 29.9 ft/sec. When combined with elevated pull-side power at Wrigley Field's 355-foot right field lines, power and speed converge into an all-around superstar season.

How This Simulator Calculates Outcomes

Batted Ball Trajectory & Aerodynamics

Calculates projectile flight based on initial exit velocity $V_0$, launch angle $\theta$, gravity $g = 32.2 \text{ ft/s}^2$, and backspin aerodynamic lift with atmospheric drag. Distances are compared against real ballpark outfield fence depths at that specific spray angle.

Base Stealing & Catcher Pop-Time Math

The runner’s arrival time at second base is calculated from secondary lead distance (reducing the 90 ft distance), jump reaction latency, and top sprint speed. The defense's time is the pitch delivery (0.40s) + catcher pop time (exchange + throw ~ 1.95s) + throw flight to second base.

162-Game Pace Projections

Every rep simulates high-leverage plate appearances and stolen base opportunities throughout a full MLB campaign. Projections scale your current per-game rates to calculate whether you surpass the legendary 40/40 threshold.
