How Billboard Calculates SEA

Since 2018, Luminate weights streaming equivalent albums into two tiers: 1,250 paid on-demand audio streams (Apple Music, Spotify Premium) equal 1 album unit, while 3,750 ad-supported audio or official video streams equal 1 album unit.

Track Equivalents (TEA)

When fans buy individual songs rather than the entire album, Billboard credits 10 individual track downloads as 1 Track Equivalent Album unit. Lead radio singles often contribute significantly to pre-release TEA.

Physical Vinyl & D2C Power

Pure physical album copies (Vinyl LPs, CDs, Cassettes) count 1-to-1 without conversion factors. A strong vinyl pre-order campaign often provides the crucial 20,000 to 50,000 pure sales margin needed to secure the #1 debut over streaming competitors.

Chart Eligibility & Luminate Verification Rules

  • Tracking Week Window: Friday 12:00:00 AM EST through Thursday 11:59:59 PM EST. Streams or physical copies shipped outside this window count towards adjacent chart frames.
  • Physical Shipment Rule: Pre-ordered physical items (vinyl, CDs, box sets) only count in the week they are physically shipped/fulfilled to the consumer, not the purchase order week.
  • D2C Digital Albums: Direct-to-consumer digital downloads must comply with price minimums ($3.49 minimum for full album eligibility) and limits per customer credit card.
