Hitler visits Chamberlain at Wahnfried
In October 1923, Adolf Hitler was received at Wahnfried (Bayreuth) by the aged Wagner circle and a paralyzed Houston Stewart Chamberlain. Chamberlain hailed Hitler as Germany's savior, giving the nascent Nazi movement elite nationalist legitimacy.
Chamberlain's 4-Part Racial Dogma Konrad Heiden Analysis
Chamberlain asserts human races are engineered like livestock ("in the horse stable and on the chicken farm"). Yet he immediately concedes ignorance: "And if someone asks where this material comes from, I must reply that I don't know."
Demands ruthless generation-spanning elimination: "The exposure of sickly children was one of the most beneficent laws of the Greeks, Romans, and Teutons."
Offspring must be bred "exclusively in the narrower tribal circle." Yet Chamberlain simultaneously ridicules a historic "pure race" as a "mystical concept" and "airy phantasm."
Chamberlain claims extraordinary races require a mobile mixture of foreign blood (e.g. Franks, Prussians). Despairing of physical markers, he retreats into "Elective Affinity": "supposing there had been a common Indo-European mother race... Aryan blood community is absurd."
