Collegiate Goalpost Dimensions & Mechanics

In NCAA Football, the goalpost crossbar is 10 feet (3.05 m) off the ground, and the uprights are 18 feet 6 inches (5.64 m) apart—matching NFL dimensions since 1991. The uprights extend at least 35 feet skyward.

The kick spot is standardly 7 yards behind the line of scrimmage, with the goalpost positioned along the back end-line of the 10-yard end zone. Thus, a scrimmage line on the 25-yard line yields a 42-yard field goal (25 + 7 + 10 = 42 yards).

Aerodynamics, Hash Angle & Crosswinds

College hash marks are spaced 40 feet apart (6.67 yards left or right of field center). Kicking from the college hash creates a sharper diagonal angle than the NFL's narrow 18'6" hashes.

Crosswinds impart continuous lateral Magnus and drag acceleration onto the prolate spheroid football, causing long kicks to drift up to 12 feet off-target. A lower launch angle pierces headwinds, while a higher launch angle protects against edge rushers.
