Batted Ball Flight & Ballpark Trajectory
Statcast Aerodynamics & White Sox Run Expectancy
Colson Montgomery is Chicago’s premier left-handed slugging shortstop. This simulator couples 4th-order Runge-Kutta numerical flight integration (accounting for gravitational pull, Reynolds-dependent drag, and Magnus spin lift) with MLB Statcast hit probability tables and the 24-state Run Expectancy (RE24) matrix.
1. Atmospheric Ballistics & Magnus Lift
Every batted baseball experiences quadratic air drag Fd = ½ ρ v² Cd A and backspin-generated Magnus lift Fm = ½ ρ v² Cl A. At 2,150 RPM backspin, Montgomery’s 107 mph line drive stays aloft 0.4 seconds longer, carrying it over the outfielders’ heads.
2. Guaranteed Rate Field Wall Dimensions
Left Field: 330 ft (8 ft wall), Left-Center: 375 ft, Dead Center: 400 ft, Right-Center: 375 ft, Right Field: 335 ft. Balls exceeding the specific radial fence distance and clearance altitude register as Home Runs in 30/30 MLB ballparks.
3. RE24 Run Expectancy Shift
In a standard MLB game, having a runner on 2nd with 1 out carries an expected run value of 0.664 runs. When Montgomery lashes a ball off the wall for an RBI double, the new state (runner on 2nd, 1 out + 1 scored run) yields 1.664 runs, netting a +1.00 RE24 delta.
