A 400 m vessel is waiting at Rotterdam with 80 containers queued. Stow them in the right bays and the right order — and feel exactly why shipping became a 2024 story.

Drag a container from the yard onto any bay cell, or click a card then click a cell. 40 ft containers span two bays.
Drag a container onto a bay cell to begin stowage. Heavy weights high up will collapse the GM dial. Hazmat cannot sit next to reefer. Felixstowe must end up on top.
Suez Canal stress test
Suez enforces a 16.0 m draft limit through a 400 m cross-section. Asymmetric loading or excessive list pushes one side of the hull deeper than the canal bank allows. A single 20° wind list on the Ever Given stopped roughly 12% of world trade for six days in March 2021.
Why containers became a 2024 story
Five moments that pulled intermodal shipping out of Hollywood car chases and into literary consciousness. You just performed the choreography that links them all.
1956Malcom McLean launches containerization. The first purpose-built container ship, the Ideal X, sails from Newark to Houston carrying 58 35-foot boxes. Loading time per ton falls from days to hours. The grammar of global trade is rewritten in a single voyage — and the bay-plan grid you're loading today is a direct descendant.
2021The Ever Given grounds in the Suez Canal. A 20° crosswind list on a 400 m, 220,000-tonne vessel wedges bow-first into the eastern bank for six days. Roughly 12% of world trade stalls. News outlets publish bay-plan diagrams for the first time in a generation. The phrase "supply chain" stops being abstract.
2021–22COVID port congestion cascades. LA/Long Beach, Shanghai, and Felixstowe queue dozens of mega-ships at anchor for months. Containers pile up in the wrong hemispheres. Ordinary shoppers learn what "reefer plug", "twenty-foot equivalent unit", and "blank sailing" mean — because the lawn furniture they ordered floats off Long Beach for nine months.
2024Dock-worker strike waves hit both US coasts and Hamburg. The ILA walkout on the US East and Gulf coasts and parallel action in northern Europe pause millions of TEU. The choreography you just performed — GM, trim, list, port sequencing, hazmat segregation — re-enters public conversation as something other people besides stevedores actually think about.
2024The literary surge. Novelists and short-story writers begin setting scenes in container yards, on anchorage queues, in crane cabs. The shipping container is no longer a Hollywood prop. Anna Krivolapova's question — "why is everyone writing about this?" — gets answered by the work itself. You just felt the answer in your hands.
