Mastering the Goal-Line Option: Why Jayden Maiava Walked In

In modern spread offenses, the red-zone read option eliminates a defender without blocking him. By leaving the back-side defensive end (the "Read Key") unblocked, the quarterback places him in an inescapable dilemma. If the defender pinches down on the running back dive, the quarterback pulls the ball and sprints into the vacant perimeter.

1. The Mesh Point Mechanics The QB rides the football in the running back’s belly for 0.4–0.6 seconds while fixing his eyes exclusively on the edge defender's helmet and hips.

2. Crash vs. Surf Edge Rules If the edge rusher turns his shoulders perpendicular to the line of scrimmage, he has committed to the dive. The QB pulls and keeps. If he shuffles flat (surf), give the dive.

3. Pylon Leverage & Walking In At the goal line, defensive backs are squeezed inside by condensed formations. Once the QB turns the corner past the crashing end, green turf opens up for the untouched walk-in touchdown!
