Goal-Line Review & Win Probability Lab

Analyze how indisputable visual evidence, camera parallax, and the goal line vertical plane decide game-winning touchdowns—and measure the massive win probability swing of rulings upheld on field.

RULING UPHELD

Replay footage does not provide indisputable visual evidence to overturn the touchdown called on the field.

Visual Certainty: 58% (Requires ≥85% to Overturn)

Plane Geometry & Ball Tracking

Goal Line Plane: X = 0.00 in
Ball Leading Tip: +1.40 in
Status at Knee Down: BROKE PLANE
Parallax Distortion: 0.42° (Negligible)
Official NCAA/NFL Rule Context: The goal line is a vertical plane extending upwards infinitely and outside the pylons. A ball in player possession that touches or breaks any part of this plane before the ball carrier is ruled down constitutes an immediate touchdown. To overturn any call on the field, the referee must have irrefutable video proof. If camera angles are blocked or millimeter margins are ambiguous, the ruling stands/is upheld.
Ready. Scrub scrubber or switch cameras.

The Three Standards: Confirmed vs Upheld vs Overturned

CONFIRMED: Clear visual evidence proves the call on the field was 100% correct.

UPHELD / STANDS: There is insufficient conclusive evidence to confirm or overturn; the default call made live on the field remains valid.

OVERTURNED: Indisputable, incontrovertible camera footage proves the field call was objectively wrong beyond any reasonable doubt.

The Parallax Illusion on Goal-Line Cameras

Because cameras are fixed at physical stadium elevations or slightly offset from the pylon, perspective distortion (parallax) frequently creates optical illusions.

An elevated ball may appear to cross the goal line while still hanging 3 inches back, or conversely, an obscured football may appear short when its nose has already sliced the invisible 3D chalk boundary.

Win Probability Leverage in the Final Seconds

Goal line plays in the final 30 seconds possess the highest win-probability leverage in football. In our Vanderbilt situation:

Trailing by 4 points with under 20 seconds remaining on 4th down, scoring a touchdown catapults win probability from 13.3% to 89.4%. Overturning the touchdown drops victory odds to 0.0%.
